Tiziana J. Chiusi, born in Rome, is a distinguished German-Italian legal scholar specializing in civil law, Roman law, and European legal comparison. She completed her law studies at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1982, followed by notarial training. Chiusi furthered her education in Roman law and ancient Near Eastern legal systems, earning her doctorate in 1987 with a dissertation on civil procedural law. After academic positions in Padua and Munich, she habilitated in 1999 with a thesis on Roman enrichment law. In 2001, Chiusi was appointed to the Chair of Civil Law, Roman Law, and European Legal Comparison at Saarland University. She has served as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Director of the Institute for European Law. In 2020, Chiusi became the first woman to chair the German Jurists' Faculty Association in its century-long history. Her research focuses on the legal status of slaves and foreigners in ancient Rome, as well as the relationship between private law and human rights.
