Chiara Franceschini is an esteemed art historian specializing in Early Modern art. She has been a Professor of Art History at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München since June 1, 2016. Franceschini's academic journey began with studies in archaeology, art history, and Early Modern history at the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Università di Pisa, culminating in a Ph.D. in 2008. Prior to her current role, she held positions at the Warburg Institute (2009-2013) and taught Renaissance Studies at University College London (2011-2016). Her research focuses on Italian and European art of the Renaissance, examining the role of images, artists, and spaces in the social, political, and religious conflicts of the premodern era. Franceschini has led significant projects, including the ERC-funded "SACRIMA" project, which explored the normativity of sacred images in Early Modern Europe. Her work contributes to a deeper understanding of the visual cultures and sacred geographies of the period. Currently, she leads a new ERC AdG ARCHIATER - Heritage of disease, on the art and architectures of early modern hospitals in European cities.
