Italian researchers in Germany continue to push the frontiers of neuroscience. On March 1, 2026, the Italian investigative TV program PresaDiretta (RAI3) aired the episode “From the Human-Machine Interface to Neurorights”, featuring the work of Francesca Santoro, member of SIGN e.V., researcher at the Forschungszentrum Jülich and professor at RWTH Aachen University. At RWTH Aachen, the team led by Santoro has developed the world’s first biohybrid synapse, a breakthrough that opens new possibilities for direct communication between biological neurons and artificial systems. The episode also highlights related advances in brain science, including the work of an Italian researcher at University College London who contributed to an international effort to produce the first comprehensive map of a mouse brain. The report takes viewers on a journey into the mysteries of the brain, at a time when UNESCO is examining the ethics of neurotechnology and asking whether neurorights should be recognized among the fundamental rights of human beings. ▶ Watch the segment featuring Francesca Santoro here: https://www.raiplay.it/.
