On Tuesday, November 19, Italian scientific excellence took center stage at a double event commemorating the recognition of the SIGN network of Italian scientists in Germany as a non-profit association by German authorities. The Embassy hosted a panel discussion titled “AI in Molecular, Material, and Medical Science: An Invaluable Tool to Accelerate the Path from Research to Application,” along with the ceremony to confer the Order of the Star of Italy honor in the rank of Officer to scientists Cecilia Clementi and Gianaurelio Cuniberti. “The numbers reflecting scientific cooperation between Germany and Italy are impressive and continuously growing,” emphasized Ambassador Armando Varricchio. “For the first time in history, this represents the second-largest community of foreign professors and the largest of those who are not native German speakers. Many of these scientists are members of ‘SIGN,’ the network of Italian scientists in Germany, which co-organized this event. This evening, we are delighted to celebrate an important milestone in the young history of SIGN, namely its recognition by federal authorities as a non-profit organization.” Receiving the Order of the Star of Italy, conferred by Italian President Sergio Mattarella to honor contributions to strengthening ties with Italy and promoting Italian prestige abroad, were two internationally renowned scientists who have been making significant contributions in Germany for many years.
