We are thrilled to highlight that Prof. Dr. Alessandra Buonanno, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (AEI) in Potsdam, leads an international consortium awarded the prestigious ERC Synergy Grant 2024. The project, titled “Making Sense of the Unexpected in the Gravitational-Wave Sky (GWSky)”, receives €12 million in funding over six years to pioneer precision insights into the gravitational-wave universe. The consortium includes top-tier researchers: Enrico Barausse — SISSA, Trieste Zvi Bern — University of California, Los Angeles Maarten van de Meent — Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen Alessandra Buonanno — AEI, Potsdam GWSky aims to harness data from current and upcoming observatories—such as LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA, Cosmic Explorer, Einstein Telescope, and LISA—as precision laboratories. The goal: to push the frontier of astrophysics and fundamental physics by solving Einstein’s complex equations and interpreting gravitational-wave signals with unprecedented clarity.
