Maria Lieber, born in Sögel, Emsland, is a distinguished German Romance philologist and linguist. She pursued her studies in Romance languages and German studies at RWTH Aachen University from 1975 to 1981, focusing on secondary education. In 1986, she earned her doctorate with a dissertation on Maurice Grevisse and French grammar. Lieber's academic career includes a tenure as a professor of Romance linguistics at the Technical University of Dresden, where she contributed significantly to the field until her retirement in 2022. Her research interests encompass the history of Romance languages, translation studies, and the exploration of cultural interactions between German-speaking regions and the Romance-speaking world. Throughout her career, she has been actively involved in various academic organizations, including the German Italianists Association and the Center for European Enlightenment Studies. Lieber's scholarly work has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of Romance linguistics and fostering cross-cultural academic exchanges.
