Francesca Calegari is an Italian physicist renowned for her contributions to attosecond science. She earned her Master's degree in physics from the University of Milan in 2005 and completed her Ph.D. at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2009. Following her doctorate, Calegari undertook postdoctoral research at the Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica della Materia and later at the Polytechnic University of Milan. In 2012, she became a researcher at the Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnologies of the National Research Council in Milan and served as a contract professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan. By 2016, Calegari transitioned to the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany, where she leads the Attosecond Science division at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science. She also holds a full professorship in physics at the University of Hamburg. Her research focuses on real-time tracking and control of electron dynamics in complex systems, ranging from simple molecules to biologically relevant compounds and nanostructured materials. Calegari has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the International Commission for Optics Prize and the Ernst Abbe Medal in 2017, the Zdenek Herman Molecule Young Scientist Prize in 2018, and election as a Fellow of the Optical Society in 2020.
