Cecilia Clementi is an Italian-American scientist renowned for her contributions to computational biophysics. Born in Italy, she pursued physics at the University of Florence, earning her Laurea in 1995. She then completed her doctoral studies at the International School for Advanced Studies. Following her Ph.D., Clementi engaged in postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Diego, as part of the La Jolla Interfaces in Science program. In 2001, Clementi began her academic career at Rice University as an assistant professor. By 2009, she had advanced to the position of Professor of Chemistry. Her research at Rice focused on simulating complex biophysical processes, particularly through coarse-grain modeling of macromolecular systems. In 2016, she co-directed the National Science Foundation's Molecular Sciences Software Institute, emphasizing the development of computational tools for molecular science. Clementi's expertise led her to Berlin in 2017, where she was appointed as an Einstein Foundation fellow at the Free University of Berlin. Her work during this fellowship centered on multiscale modeling of biophysical systems to elucidate cellular functions. In June 2020, she was appointed as a Professor of Physics at the Free University of Berlin, further solidifying her role in the scientific community. Throughout her career, Clementi has received numerous accolades, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2004, the Hamill Innovation Award in 2007 and 2014, and the Robert A. Welch Foundation's Norman Hackerman Award in Chemical Research in 2009. Beyond her scientific endeavors, she is a certified scuba divemaster and an avid underwater photographer, showcasing her passion for the ocean's depths.
