The SIGN Impulse Event “Space as an Interdisciplinary Frontier: Science, Technology, and Society in the Aerospace Era” explores space as a new arena for interdisciplinary research, technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and societal reflection.
Space is no longer only the domain of astronomy and aerospace engineering. It now connects physics, materials science, artificial intelligence, computer science, Earth observation, medicine, law, economics, security studies, sustainability, and the social sciences.
At the core of the event will be two days of closed-door dialogue, conducted under the Chatham House Rule, on European space entrepreneurship at the intersection of artificial intelligence, sustainability, and technological sovereignty. The discussions will be chaired by Marcello Romano, member of SIGN’s Extended Board, and Alessandro Golkar, both full professors at the Technical University of Munich.
Around fifteen senior Italian and German representatives will take part, including delegates from the BMFTR, the Italian Space Agency, DLR, and ESPI, together with NewSpace founders, investors, and leading academics from both countries. The objective is to develop a shared position on how to accelerate Europe’s space ecosystem and to translate the resulting recommendations into concrete input for national and European policymakers.
The broader symposium will address key developments of the aerospace era, including satellite technologies, sustainable space infrastructures, space governance, technology transfer, and the role of space-based systems in tackling challenges on Earth. It will bring together researchers, students, entrepreneurs, investors, institutional representatives, and experts to discuss how interdisciplinary collaboration can create new perspectives for science, industry, and policy.
As the network of Italian researchers in Germany, SIGN e.V. aims to use this event as a platform for strengthening scientific and technological exchange between Italy and Germany, making excellence visible across disciplines, supporting Europe’s strategic autonomy, and encouraging young researchers and entrepreneurs to take an active role in shaping Europe’s aerospace future.
